América awaits the winner of the match between Pumas and Tigres.

América loses 2-0 to Atlético San Luis, but reaches Mexican soccer final

MEXICO CITY – The Águilas del América lost 2-0 to Atlético San Luis in the second leg of the Liga Mx semifinals, but advanced to the final with a 5-2 aggregate score.

With the first leg result forcing Atlético San Luis to score 6 goals to advance, coach André Jardine modified his lineup and allowed the entry of players who are usually starters, that is to say, he gave priority to his team arriving with all its elements in shape for the start of the final.

Atletico San Luis had the clearest chances in the first half, but never really put America in trouble; goalkeeper Malagon and the defense were in charge of avoiding an early goal from San Luis that could have put some excitement in the tie.

Thus, the two teams went to the dressing room with the score 0-0 and in this way Atlético San Luis lost 45 minutes that could have been very important in a possible comeback.

In the second half, San Luis pressed the accelerator a little more and broke the 0-0 draw with a goal scored by Ángel Zaldívar in the 84th minute.

To avoid a possible scare, coach André Jardine sent players such as Fidalgo and Quiñones to the field, which allowed them to balance the scales, after San Luis came close to the second goal, almost immediately after the first.

But América managed the advantage and San Luis was only able to get close to the scoreboard in the 87th minute, towards the end of the match, again through Ángel Zaldívar, but it was too late.

Thus, América, with a 5-2 aggregate score, reached the Mexican soccer final and awaits the winner of the other semi-final, in which Pumas and Tigres will face each other for the other ticket; the felines from the north have a 1-0 advantage after the first match played in the country’s capital.

América, the tournament’s overall leader, is trying to win its 14th Mexican soccer title and, if it wins the final, it will be the first time in the last five years that it has been able to lift a championship.

The second leg of the final will be played at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
