LAFC’s rise to the Top 10 on Concacaf Rankings

MIAMI, FLORIDA – The latest edition of the Concacaf Club Rankings (CCR) is out, and the results of games throughout the region’s top domestic leagues, plus the Concacaf Central American Cup and Concacaf Caribbean Cup, have resulted in many changes.

The Confederation launched a revamped rankings system earlier this year, with clubs gaining points for results in official domestic league matches, regional cup matches and Concacaf Champions League play.

The CCR will determine draw seedings and pots for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. The Draw for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League will take place on December 13. The rankings used for the Champions Cup Draw will be published on December 11.

LAFC and Orlando City enter Top 10

In addition to Club América moving past Monterrey, several other changes took place in the Top 10, with a pair of Major League Soccer (MLS) teams, Los Angeles FC and Orlando City SC, replacing Nashville SC and Liga MX side Toluca in ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Places three through eight remained the same from last month, with Tigres, Club Leon, Toluca, Philadelphia Union, Chivas and Pachuca staying put before the introductions of LAFC and Orlando City.

LAFC’s on the Top 10

LAFC’s rise to the Top 10 is particularly notable, as the club has only been competing in Concacaf for a few years. LAFC finished in second place in the 2023 MLS season, and they have been one of the most successful clubs in the United States in recent years.

LAFC’s success is due in part to their strong roster, which includes players such as Carlos Vela.

LAFC’s rise to the Top 10 is a sign of the growing strength of MLS in Concacaf. The league has now become a major player in the region, and MLS clubs are increasingly challenging for top honors.

Other notable changes

In addition to LAFC’s rise, there were several other notable changes in the Top 10.

  • Orlando City SC also made the Top 10 for the first time. The club finished in fifth place in the 2023 MLS season, and they have been a consistent playoff contender in recent years.
  • Club América overtook Monterrey for the top spot. Club América has been one of the most successful clubs in Concacaf in recent years, and they have won the Concacaf Champions League seven times.
  • Alajuelense remained in second place, and Comunicaciones returned to the Top 5.
  • The top four teams in the Caribbean remained the same, with Violette (HAI), Cibao FC (DOM), and Mount Pleasant (JAM) leading the way.

The 2024 Concacaf Champions League is set to begin in February 2024. The tournament will feature the top 22 clubs in Concacaf, and it is expected to be one of the most competitive tournaments in the region.
