United States Calls Up Cade Cowell After Gio Reyna’s Withdrawal

LOS ANGELES. Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara player Cade Cowell has been called up at the last minute to join the U.S. Men’s National Team after Gio Reyna was sidelined due to injury. Cowell, who was training with Chivas for a friendly match against Colima, will now report immediately to the Team USA.

A Rising Star

Cowell, who holds dual nationality (American and Mexican), has shown significant improvement in his game, earning him this unexpected call-up. The U.S. National Team, which currently lacks a confirmed head coach, is awaiting the potential arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager.

The U.S. will face Canada this Saturday and take on New Zealand next week. Cowell missed out on the call-up for the recent Copa América, and some media outlets speculated about a possible invitation from the Mexican National Team. However, Cowell is ineligible to play for Mexico, as he has already participated in official matches with the United States, solidifying his commitment to the U.S. team.

Controversy in Mexico

Cowell’s call-up has sparked some controversy in Mexico, as Chivas is known for fielding only Mexican players. The fact that Cowell, who is now a U.S. national team player, is part of the squad has led to mixed reactions among fans and local media.

This situation highlights the complexities of dual nationality in modern soccer, especially for young players like Cowell, who have the opportunity to represent more than one country throughout their careers.
