Mike Shildt is the new San Diego Padres manager
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced Wednesday the signing of relief pitcher Woo Suk Go, who becomes the second addition from South Korea during the MLB transfer window.
The Padres were desperate for arms in both starting pitching and relief, following the departures of Seth Lugo, Miachael Wacha and Josh Hader.
The status of Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell is still up in the air, but he will likely sign with another team in the face of high demand for the Padres’ rotation ace in the 2003 season.
San Diego confirmed Woo-Suk Go arrival with a video of his best performances in South Korea’s KBO League, where he has become one of the best relief pitchers in recent years.
Born on August 6, 1988 in Incheon, South Korea, the right-handed pitcher has a record of 19 wins and 26 losses, with a spectacular record of 139 saves and 401 strikeouts, in addition to a 3.18 ERA in the Korean league.
He was also a member of the South Korean Olympic team at the Tokyo Olympics and is one of the recent stars of the LG Twins.
His speed is around 95 mph and his main weapon is his slider.
Woo-Suk Go signed a two-season, $4.5 million contract, in line with the Padres’ new internal salary cap.
Going for more besides Woo-Suk Go
The San Diego Padres still have several roster issues to resolve, the most urgent being the hiring of outfielders to fill the holes left by the departures of Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, in addition to looking for one or two starters to complete their rotation.
Another unknown is whether Jake Cronenworth will continue to play first base or if they will look for another starter, which could lead to one more signing for the team.
Previously, the Padres had also acquired closer Yuki Matsui, so along with Robert Suarez they could have a very promising middle and late reliever.
